Fretboard Logic SE

Volumes 1 and 2 combined

A quick browse through the Amazon reviews of this book tells you that Fretboard Logic SE is a well liked and respected book. Even though the majority of reviews are five star, twenty five percent of the ratings are between one and three so I feel it’s my duty here to explain something …

All of the one star reviews on Amazon should be deleted! Two good reasons for writing a poor review of instructional materials are: When the product claims to be something it isn’t. When the instruction is hard to follow and lacks clarity. All of the one star reviews on Amazon prove only one thing. People write reviews based on their own lack of interest in finding out what the product actually is before clicking the buy now button.

One of the one star reviews is just plain stupid, another one is because the content is exactly what the author says it is and the rest all share the same common inaccurate presumptions based on nothing the author had claimed in the first place.

So what exactly is this book about? To sum up what Fretboard Logic does is … it describes a method for finding your way around the fretboard using chords, scales and arpeggios based on logical patterns and shapes which are not taught in conventional books. And it does it well!

What this book will not do is teach you how to play the guitar and in all fairness, the author Bill Edwards makes no such claim. While it does offer some basic theory and general playing tips, it’s not what the book is about. It’s about stripping down, analysing and taking a logical view of the fretboard layout and how chords and scales relate to it, and each other, in an organised manner.

Is this information helpful? You bet it is. Not because of it’s uniqueness but because of the fact it’s one of the very few books that take you away from the conventional and overdone methods that most other books seem too scared to stray from. If there’s one thing that most guitar teaching books lack, it’s that they don’t put enough emphasis on why, how or what you should do with the information they give you. They all presume that you know exactly how to experiment and figure out things for yourself.

As you progress on the guitar there comes a point where everything you learn should start to overlap and start making sense. Fretboard Logic won’t do this alone because the bottom line is it’s down to you. What it will do however is help you take the first step towards understanding how you should go about finding that common ground between all the other elements of learning guitar.

This is exactly what the book done for me. Even though I now play and view the fretboard entirely in my own unique style, it’s this book that finally got me going and led me there after far too many years of being stuck in the guitar rut.

Fretboard Logic is not for the complete beginner but for serious guitarists that are past the first hurdle and want’s to go further than just strumming along to favourite songs then it’s a must.
